Al retired to the Desert at the start of the season in 1997 as a Snowbird from Minneapolis. He arrived with a brand new set of golf clubs that sat in his garage collecting dust and cob webs when he discovered the fabulous hiking in the Coachella Valley. He joined the Club in the fall of 1998 and became a Hike Leader the following year.
His repertoire has included many strenuous and moderate hikes in the Valley, Joshua Tree NP and Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains. In 2002 he volunteered to become Chairman of the Club Hike4Hope Committee. This annual event the first Sunday in March in the Indian Canyons has raised over 2 million dollars for the City of Hope breast cancer research projects. In addition to hiking in the Coachella Valley Al has had an opportunity to hike internationally on four continents including the "W" hike in Patagonia (twice), the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu in Peru, the Milford and Routeburn treks in New Zealand, and multiple trips to the Swiss Alps and Pyrenees in Southern France. As his hiking career winds down he will be leading Easy Hikes to introduce newcomers and other less experienced hikers to options available to enjoy the trails in our Valley.
